Well, Natural Nigerian has put a new twist to our tradition. Instead of getting stuff you might keep and never use, she packaged oils, butters, shirts, bags and other items you are bound to fully appreciate.

Follow-follow, your song tells a lot about us

Nigerian music/videos have gone from being boringly predictable to plain annoying. That's not to say that there are no correct artists out there o. Lagbaja, Asa, Nneka, Brymo to name a few, still dey make us proud ^_^. Last week a friend of mine asked: "why do you have all this...boring music. Abi you no like correct jamz?" By 'correct jamz', my friend is referring to the popular  noise that plays on almost every radio station.
There is no doubt that Nigerians are talented people and  have abundant  material  to produce some great stuff but all this 'me i wan yogodo' noise does not cut it for some us.
Think I'm exaggerating about the quality of music we get, then read Elnathan's  post on the Daily Times. It pretty much summarizes the Nigerian music industry.

Why can't Lagbaja's creativity and originality spread?
Who says we don't get recognition ?One more reason to love Lagbaja. That sisters twist out was on point!

No one is saying that we must all sound like Fela Kuti, Victor Uwaifo or Mejek Fajek (the majek of back in the day o) but please put in some extra effort at being yourself. Sometimes I can't even tell that the person singing is Nigerian. Dem go twist-twist their tongue so-taaay the English sef go scatter...anh-ahn na wetin?!!
Below is a video from Brymo that I totally appreciate.Yes, there's the party scene and what my brother calls the 'skinny-jeans-and- a Mic-Nigerian-boy- look'  but I totally dig the Eyo masquerades, the lady rocking a Twa, the Yoruba man in his traditional outfit -dancing like Yoruba man, and the ballet dancers who should have been out of place but blended beautifully well with everything else.

Like how can you listen to or watch  Ara and not know that this is Green-White-Green?
So what do you think of the Nigerian music industry? Any favorites I haven't mentioned above? Please share because I'm very interested in good music.

Bino and Fino Dance Azonto

Lol at Papa Papa's old school moves. My sisters and I love this clip.

Bino and Fino is West Africa's first children's educational cartoon. If you look to the left side of the blog you will see a Bino and Fino button asking for your support. A lot of work and finance goes into keeping this show alive so please support the makers.
For those of you who see cartoons as a waste of time you are entitled to your opinion. But remember that your kids love them and would watch whatever is available. Lets support Bino and Fino, let our kids watch cartoons with characters that look and sound like them.

God Bless Naija

As a Nigerian, I can tell you that no one criticizes Naija better than Nigerians. But today lets count our blessings and think of ways to contribute our own quota for a change. Happy Independence day to all my Nigerian People!!
Salute!

Oh happy day....

This is an unusual post.

For many years the Ogoni People from the oil producing Niger Delta of Nigeria (South-South) have fought and fought for their land to be cleaned up. Living on the best agricultural land and with vast oil resources, my Ogoni brothers and Sisters still suffer from diseases and poverty-no thanks to the pollution from gas flaring and recurrent oil spills that have been left to destroy the land for decades. Fisher men can't fish and farmers cant cultivate the land.
I was however very happy when I woke up this morning to the good news that the Nigerian Government has finally decided to begin  the clean-up of Ogoni land...amen ,hallelujah, amen hallelujah, amen!

Now, this does not mean we go to sleep oh...what this simply means is that we shine our eyes more. God bless  the environmental activist  (both at home and abroad) who continue to speak up for the people even when it seems like no one is listening, God bless Nigeria, God bless Africa!

P.s: I'm really enjoying this FOI thing! Has anyone downloaded and read the new bill submitted to NASS by the ministry for petroleum? No dulling o...

Batch B Corp Members Are You Good To Go?!

By this time last year, I was waiting for the Nigerian Youth Corp Service to post me to a 'favorable' part of Nigeria for my one year of compulsory service to Nigeria. Favorable to me meant anywhere near home and fortunately, I got posted out of my comfort zone. I was really sad but it took some scolding from my elder brother for me to grab the oppurtunity and learn to live solo...no parents, no siblings, no Uncle, no Aunts...just me, myself and the new friends I'll make.
So I packed up the essentials and headed over to Ibadan to report at Iseyin Camp for the compulsory 3 weeks of paramilitary training. I remember the day I was leaving home with my stuff and my Dad was like; 'where are you taking all that to. Would you not be coming back home after camp?'. Yes, apart from the other things ex-corp members advised me to report with, I took a blanket, sweaters, socks, and books. I mean we can't walk ropes all day , can we?^_^
Anyways,I refused to leave anything but I felt really stupid pulling all my stuff into camp. As I struggled with my box (and another bag of provisions *shamefaced*), I noticed  four soldiers laughing at my friend and I (my friend who also came in from Abuja, had a bigger box than mine). One of them called us and asked:' Otondo (white chicken), where una dey drag all that load to? Abi your camp na one month'. Well, I'm going to stay in Oyo state for 4 weeks before going back home, what do you think I was  thinking? It was at that point that I looked around and noticed that most of the other Corpers packed light. Oh well, better to have my Kaya with me than to wish I had it.
Well into the first week, I was grateful that I didn't leave anything at home because Iseyin was cold. It rained a lot and my sweaters ,extra socks and shoes came in handy. Waking up as early as 3:00 am to have your bath with cold water and then proceed to run up and down in the cold with some Man o'war fellow yelling at you is no fun. Especially when you have very little body fat to spare.
To cut the story short, I finished camp successfully (with a cold) and got posted to a government parastatal where I spent the rest of my service year.
     Rainy Days...                                            Bodija, Ibadan.
My days in Ibadan are almost up and while I appreciate the time given me by the Constitution to grow up and understand Naija better, I just want to go home! I miss my family, I miss my friends and I miss Abuja.
I've learnt a lot from this experience and there's still so much that I'll like to share with you but that will have to wait for another post. Till next time, Nigeria we hail thee!

Know the name for your gele (gaylay)?

Many of you might not know this but the Nigerian Gele (gaylay) has different styles and names...you've got "Boy's- follow-me", "ceiling fan", "hand fan"....and many others. Some ladies tie them to be so outrageously wide that they cover everyone behind or beside them. Some churches even had to ban the gele at some point (the outrageously large ones).

Lagbaja, a  Nigerian musician, wrote a song for the gele in which he listed some of the popular names ...enjoy!
Know any more styles? Please share with us...
Happy Weekends!!
